Whose Land Is It Anyways? brings Indigenous and South Asian comedians to Toronto’s Comedy Bar

Six comedians are scheduled to take the stage at Toronto’s Comedy Bar on Friday, Oct. 23, for Whose Land Is It Anyways?, a showcase featuring Indigenous and South Asian stand-up performers. Kevin Shawanda will host the 11 p.m. show on the venue’s Bloor Street main stage. The announced lineup includes Hershawn Arora, Harpreet Sehmbi, David Sealy, Jacob Wanuch, Hillary McGregor and Isabel Zaw-Tun. Comedy Bar’s description mentions colonial history, immigrant life, family expectations and community politics, although it does not specify what each performer will cover.
Sehmbi and Arora have both appeared at Just for Laughs Toronto, with other credits across Canada and the United States. Sehmbi, a Toronto-based comedian, actor and writer, released her debut comedy album, Irregular Harpbeat, in August 2022, and has appeared at the Chicago Women’s Funny Festival and New York’s Very Big Very Asian Comedy Festival. She has also held residencies at New York comedy clubs. Arora has performed at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and been featured on CBC television and radio and SiriusXM, according to Comedy Records. His own website also lists a 2021 album, Hopeless Romantic.
Isabel Zaw-Tun is originally from Fort Vermilion, Alberta, and is now based in Toronto. Sled Island lists appearances at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and Just for Laughs, along with a spot on CBC Radio’s The Debaters. Howl & Roar Records lists her debut comedy album, God’s Perfect Bitch, featuring personal stories and social commentary.
Shawanda, originally from Birch Island, Ontario, appeared in The Theatre Centre’s 2022 Real Estate Problems event. Wanuch has previously hosted Comedy Bar Danforth’s Indigenous Comedy Night open mic. Whose Land Is It Anyways? takes place at Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. W., with tickets priced at $20 online or $25 at the door.
