Where was Netflix’s BELOW filmed? The Newfoundland locations behind Snooks Arm

Netflix’s Below was filmed in Newfoundland in 2025. The strongest records support St. John’s and the surrounding metro area, Brigus South and Pouch Cove as production locations, while provincial documents tie the production more specifically to Brigus South Harbour and planned filming at Marine Park in Pouch Cove. Netflix also confirms that some water scenes were filmed on Newfoundland’s ocean.
Those records provide more detail than the general location lists circulating online. They also set useful limits: the available documents do not identify every address used in St. John’s, prove that every temporary structure authorized at Brigus South was ultimately built, or establish one Newfoundland community as the sole real-world stand-in for fictional Snooks Arm.
St. John’s and the surrounding metro area
IATSE Local 709 lists the production under its working title, Untitled Newfoundland Project — Netflix Canada, with Blue Heart Productions, ULC as the production company. The union record identifies it as a six-episode Netflix Canada series, says prep began April 7, 2025, places principal photography from July through October, and gives the filming location as “St. John’s and surrounding metro area.”
Netflix’s own 2025 announcement connects that working-title production to Below. Tudum described an untitled six-episode Newfoundland series from creator Jesse McKeown starring Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton, the same project Netflix later released as Below.
The IATSE listing does not identify individual St. John’s buildings, streets or interior locations. It also includes “Studio: Netflix Canada,” which is a production listing field rather than evidence of a physical Netflix soundstage in St. John’s.
Brigus South Harbour
The most detailed location record comes from Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Environment and Climate Change. Permit ALT14436-2025, issued July 4, 2025, names Wayne Hawkins as the permit holder and authorizes temporary fish stages, wharves and other associated structures at Brigus South Harbour to support set dressing for a Netflix Canada film production.
The document is specific about the permitted work and more limited about who carried it out. Blue Heart Productions, ULC appears on the permit’s copy list through Randy Morgan, along with the Local Service District of Brigus South, but the permit does not identify Blue Heart as the permit holder or name the person or company that physically constructed the set dressing.
The permit also required all new structures to be removed after filming and the site restored to its previous condition unless the Harbour Authority requested that any structures remain for future display. The public PDF includes a blank completion-report form, so the record establishes what was authorized for the production; it does not prove that every permitted fish stage, wharf or associated structure was ultimately built.
The permit does not identify Brigus South Harbour as Snooks Arm or assign particular scenes to the fish stages, wharves or other structures. Later reporting after production has also identified Brigus South among the series’ filming locations, supporting its inclusion here without requiring a scene-by-scene inference from the permit.
Pouch Cove and Marine Park
Pouch Cove is supported by a provincial production record. A Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation decision note says a portion of the Netflix series was scheduled to film inside Marine Park in the Town of Pouch Cove. The record says Netflix sought permission for an 8-by-20-foot wharf on Little Herring Cove Pond, with filming expected until October 2025.
The decision note was prepared while production was underway and describes the Pouch Cove work prospectively. It establishes the planned use of Marine Park and the proposed wharf without showing that the wharf was completed. Reporting after production has also identified Pouch Cove among the places where Below filmed. No primary record reviewed for this story ties Marine Park or the proposed wharf to a particular episode or identifies either one as Snooks Arm.
Were Below’s ocean scenes filmed on real water?
Yes. Netflix’s Tudum says the production forwent green screen for its ocean work and filmed scenes on Newfoundland’s ocean. Charlie Heaton told Tudum that cast and crew were on the water with the Coast Guard, driving boats, and that he was actually kayaking in the ocean.
That confirms practical filming on real ocean water and Coast Guard involvement as described by Heaton. Netflix does not identify the precise bay, harbour or offshore area used for those scenes, or the specific Coast Guard unit involved, so the available evidence does not support assigning the water work to Brigus South or any particular body of water.
Was Below filmed in a studio?
No primary production source reviewed for this story identifies a specific studio or soundstage used for Below interiors. The IATSE record gives St. John’s and the surrounding metro area as the production location, while Netflix’s statement about avoiding green screen applies specifically to the ocean scenes.
That leaves the interior-production question unresolved. There is enough evidence to say that substantial location work took place in Newfoundland and that the ocean sequences used real water, but there is not enough to claim that every interior was filmed on location or that the series used no studio facilities.
Were any other Newfoundland locations used?
Other Newfoundland communities have appeared in secondary filming-location reports and databases. SCENE 49 searched for direct production, government, municipal or strong firsthand support for additional places but did not find evidence strong enough to add another community to the confirmed list.
No additional community met the evidence threshold used here. Netflix has not supplied a precise location for the confirmed ocean work.
Is Snooks Arm a real place?
Netflix identifies Calvin Penney as a bayman from Snooks Arm, Newfoundland, establishing the fictional community as Calvin’s hometown in Below. Newfoundland also had a real community called Snook’s Arm, with an apostrophe; Statistics Canada listed it as a designated place in the 2016 census geography, and a Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly committee transcript in 2018 said its relocation was completed.
No production or government source reviewed for this story identifies the real Snook’s Arm as a Below filming location. The Brigus South permit also does not say that its harbour set dressing represented Snooks Arm, so the series setting and the confirmed filming locations should be kept separate.
The evidence supports St. John’s and the surrounding metro area, Brigus South and Pouch Cove as Newfoundland communities used by the production. Provincial records tie the project more specifically to Brigus South Harbour and planned filming at Marine Park, while Netflix confirms real ocean filming without naming the precise water location. Below arrives on Netflix on Oct. 8, with all six episodes released together.
Toronto band Zeus is returning to the recordings that surrounded its first album for Lost & Found (The Say Us Archives), a 13-track collection arriving Oct 9, 2026 through Arts & Crafts.
