Netflix’s Below centres on fisherman Calvin Penney and his family in the Newfoundland community of Snooks Arm. Josh Hartnett plays Calvin; Charlie Heaton, Ruby Stokes and Rohan Campbell play his three children, Wade, Mary and Jay; and Willow Kean plays Calvin’s sister, Ruth. Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda Howander, the visiting marine researcher Calvin turns to when the threat in the water reaches his family.
Netflix has revealed far more about the Penneys than it has about several supporting characters. Where the streamer or creator Jesse McKeown has not explained a character’s role or relationship to the family, those details remain undisclosed rather than being inferred from trailers, photographs or surnames.
Josh Hartnett plays Calvin Penney
Calvin Penney is the father of Wade, Mary and Jay and one of the residents still living in Snooks Arm. Netflix describes him as a fisherman who is still dealing with the mysterious death of his father decades earlier. McKeown has also said Calvin and Wade run an Airbnb as Calvin looks for ways to make a living after the decline of the fishery. Hartnett’s recent credits include Oppenheimer and Trap, while his television work includes Penny Dreadful. He is also an executive producer on Below.
Mackenzie Davis plays Fonda Howander
Fonda Howander is the visiting marine researcher who becomes involved with Calvin as the danger around Snooks Arm escalates. Netflix’s teaser identifies her as a marine biologist and says Calvin seeks her help after Wade begins developing unexplained symptoms. Netflix has not disclosed any family relationship between Fonda and the Penneys. Davis is a Canadian actor from Vancouver whose credits include Station Eleven, Halt and Catch Fire and Blade Runner 2049.
Charlie Heaton plays Wade Penney
Wade is Calvin’s youngest son and the child who has remained with him in Snooks Arm. McKeown has said father and son run an Airbnb together, while Netflix has revealed that Wade begins experiencing unexplained symptoms as the central threat emerges. Heaton plays Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things; his other credits include The Souvenir Part II and The New Mutants.
Willow Kean plays Ruth Penney
Ruth Penney is Calvin’s sister and part of the family still living in Snooks Arm as the community faces the prospect of resettlement. Kean has a direct Newfoundland and Labrador connection: she is from Labrador West and is based in St. John’s. Her screen credits include The King Tide and Away from Everywhere, alongside extensive theatre work in the province.
Ruby Stokes plays Mary Penney
Mary is Calvin’s daughter and Jay’s sister. McKeown has said Mary and Jay return from the mainland during a Come Home Year, while Calvin is considering whether he can persuade them to stay. Netflix has not released a more detailed individual character description for Mary ahead of the series. Stokes played Lucy Carlyle in Lockwood & Co. and Francesca Bridgerton in Bridgerton, and also appeared in The Burning Girls.
Rohan Campbell plays Jay Penney
Jay is Calvin’s son and Mary’s brother. Like Mary, he has been living on the mainland and returns to Newfoundland during the Come Home Year. Netflix has not disclosed much more about Jay’s individual storyline before release. Campbell is Canadian and was raised in Cochrane, Alberta. His credits include The Hardy Boys, Halloween Ends and The Monkey.
Kaleb Horn plays Noah
Netflix confirms Kaleb Horn as Noah but has not publicly explained Noah’s role in the central story or identified a relationship between him and the Penney family. Horn was born in Ottawa, and his credits include Chucky, Dream Scenario and Revival.
Natasha Henstridge is listed as Jan by current cast databases
Netflix includes Natasha Henstridge in the official Below cast but does not name her character on its public title page or in its current Tudum cast guide. Rotten Tomatoes and TV Insider currently identify her character as Jan. No reliable pre-release source located by SCENE 49 explains Jan’s connection to Calvin or the Penney family, so that relationship remains undisclosed.
Henstridge was born in Springdale, Newfoundland and Labrador, and lived in nearby South Brook before her family moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, when she was a child. Her film credits include Species and The Whole Nine Yards, and she has also appeared in Canadian television including Diggstown.
Mary Walsh plays Linda, the mayor
Mary Walsh is part of the Below cast as Linda. A Netflix-supplied publicity caption identifies the character by name, while McKeown told The Canadian Press that Walsh plays the mayor of the community. Netflix has not identified Linda as a member of the Penney family.
Walsh is from St. John’s. She was a founding member of CODCO, co-created and starred in This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and later wrote, produced and starred in Hatching, Matching and Dispatching.
Joshua Close is also in the supporting cast
Joshua Close is listed in current cast databases as a police officer, but there is a pre-release discrepancy over the character’s name. Rotten Tomatoes and TV Insider currently use Officer Jaxon Noseworthy, while an older Netflix-supplied publicity caption used Officer Jackson Noteworthy. Until Netflix publishes a definitive character listing, SCENE 49 is treating the spelling as unresolved rather than choosing between the two versions. No verified relationship between Close’s character and the Penney family has been disclosed. Close is a Canadian actor from Oakville, Ontario. His credits include Fargo, The Master and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Who else is in the Below cast?
Netflix-supplied publicity materials identify Azriel Dalman as young Calvin and Kamryn Pliva as young Ruth, establishing that the series includes younger versions of the two Penney siblings. The same publicity material names Rhiannon Morgan as Brenda Penney, Alexander Karim as Hugo and David Wenham as Steve.
Those names are confirmed, but Netflix has not yet provided enough character information to state how Brenda, Hugo or Steve fit into the Penney family story without inference. The same limitation applies to Noah and Jan: they are confirmed cast entries, but their relationships and larger roles have not been disclosed in the available pre-release material.
